Over the past couple years I have been studying into nutrition and healthy living. I have read many books on the subject and have learned many valuable tips. Like any field there is a difference in opinions on the best way to eat and what foods to not eat. There is a considerable amount of confusion with the many fad and extreme diets of today, be it low carb; south beach; vegan; only raw, or organic only. One thing is certain, fads come and go but God’s word is eternal. There is one constant of many of the authors I have read and that is accepting the knowledge of healthy living from the pages of the Bible. One well-taken point to the dismay of these writers is the widespread ill health among Christians and the long list of prayer requests for the many illnesses of believers. The contention is that Christians should be the healthiest people on the planet. There are just too many scriptures showing that God wishes that His people should have abundant health and be free from the diseases of the nations around them. Consider the passage in Deuteronomy chapters five through seven, “…keep all My commandments, statutes, and judgments that it may be well with you and your children forever… and that you may prolong your days in the land… and that you would teach them diligently to your children…for you are a holy people, a special treasure above all the people on the face of the earth… you shall be blessed above all peoples, and the Lord shall take away all sickness and keep you from the terrible afflictions that affect other nations.” What a great promise from God to claim!

Israel of old was famed for being the healthiest people of their time. God did promise that following His way would keep them well. Elmer A Josephson, a Baptist minister, wrote a groundbreaking book in the early 60s entitled “God’s Key To Health And Happiness” showing observance to God’s law will bring about abundant, sickness- free living. More recently writers such as Jordan Rubin have preached the wisdom of following God’s law for better health. He too says it is a shameful thing for God’s people not to follow the revealed keys to health in the bible. Many others such as those men and Dr George Malkmus claimed to have been healed by finally eating the “Makers Diet” and avoiding the manufactured foods of modern day. Much of what is written by these experts would be ridiculed by ministers today because the popular theme they preach is that the Law is “done away” and of no value to Christians. One radio preacher said you actually sin by trying to follow God’s law! Spirit life would be unconcerned with physical things like food and drink but until the time comes for men to be transformed into spirit, we would do well to strive for better health and eating right as our Maker wishes. “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.” III John 2
